For those who have visited Langvad at Jamboree-time over the last 5 or 6 years, our repertoire this year may come as a surprise.
That is to say there are no surprises: no composer in residence, no contemporary music, no experimental compositions, nor even any music from the last century of music.
Indeed our composers, Haydn, Mozart, Schubert, Beethoven and Brahms all come blessed with that ultimate badge of established endorsement, "Viennese", and all our music was written within a relatively thin slice of history.
But does this mean that all this year will be conservative, safe, and unadventurous?
Well, history rarely unfolds predictably and all our composers met with their full share of indifference, incredulity and downright hostility on their journey into the roll-call of immortality.
So let us indeed worship them again, but let us remind ourselves of their tenacity, courage, and unquenchable desire; and let us ask ourselves if we would have been wise enough to receive then what we now so easily take for granted.
Let us offer these five young men a welcome for two weeks into the fertile Langvad air where they can stretch out on the grass away from the history books and live with us for a short while.
